A white 2015 Western Star dump truck with the bed raised struck the highway sign that rises above three lanes of traffic, Santiago said.

That sign tumbled down and crushed a gray 2019 Ford F-150 driving in one of the middle lanes of the highway, according to Santiago and ODOT’s live-streaming cameras.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A year or so ago another dump truck with its bed raised hit a pedestrian overpass very close to where this occurred , the dump truck driver died that time...

I still fail to see how you can drive on the highway and not know your dump bed is tilted up. Do we really have to install clearance bars at all on ramps for this to not happen?

I have known several very good truck drivers and several very bad truck drivers, this does not surprise me at all.

I’ve never driven a dump truck, but there’s gotta be some kind of warning light or something??

Most of modern society is planned specifically around enabling idiots to continue living, so, maybe?

I was behind a flatbed on I-95 today that somehow dropped a bag of Quickcrete on the road in front of me, not sure how that slid off or why it wasn’t restrained, but, people are freaking stupid and we need more enforcement of this sort of thing and maybe dial back on the randomly stopped one speeding driver out of the crowd of 2,000 that are also speeding.

We had a guy at one of my former jobs who never met a gear he didn't want to grind. Don't know how he got a Class A when he didn't know what a clutch was. He finally got fired after he filled our fuel pad with diesel after he fell asleep in the driver's seat while fueling up.

I worked with a trucking company that had a governor on one tractor only for that one driver. That driver was not allowed to drive any other tractors, they did mostly belly dumps and end dump long trailers for road construction.

Even just the wind noise and increased air resistance along with compromised handling should be obvious.

same here.  you would think the truck would freak out if it was in the correct position

I have ridden in a dump truck many times and there’s no fucking way that you’re rolling down the highway and you don’t know your dump bed is up.

Exchange ‘ was’ for ‘wasn’t’ and that is a reasonable thing for the truck to do.

A quick google search shows this seems to happen more often then you’d expect.

Had a motorcyclist killed near me when a gas cylinder fell off a truck and hit him. I lived in Marana, Arizona, for a bit, and that town was actually very strict about pulling people over for not securing their loads.

I don’t think I’d be following any where near behind a truck that has its bed raised. I wonder hit the pickup driver did t notice and was close enough to get wrecked. G’z.

I see janky rusted out trucks with unsecured loads and no tailgates all the time around here, I doubt any of them will ever get so much as a ticket for it

You’d think so. Frankly it seems like it should be pretty trivial to limit them to low speed if the bed is up, though clearly that isn’t done, or is at least far from universal.

Which the two guys I used to work with, Monte and Duane, often were. They still never made that particular fuck up.

Is there such a thing as compromised handling in a dump truck? Serious question, have never been in one but I imagine those things drive like they look.

Several years ago, was behind a semi that failed to secure its rear doors. About every mile, a barrel of something would work its way off the back. Was like a real life Donkey Kong, but without the ape. Called 911 and gave them the plates , they said they’d try to get someone out. I ended up speeding around the driver and waved him over. His excuse - oh, that guy didn’t latch the door after he finished loading me. Cops never showed up before the guy just secured his doors and took off down the road.

When I was on my way to work one day last week a truck was dropping random boxes onto I-95 in front of me. I managed to avoid them all, but a Corolla in front of me wasn’t as fortunate.

But enforcing standards on private business would be some kind of onerous regulation that just can’t be tolerated.  The shit I see here on construction related vehicles has me doubting this is a legit first world area.

If you have handling, you can make it worse. Especially dramatically worse aero like you'd get with a tipped dump bed.
